São Paulo, May 11, 2010 – Commencing immediately, the Social Carbon Company will now be called Sustainable Carbon. The change in the company name reflects Sustainable Carbon’s growing international presence that requires a bold new visual identity as it seeks to consolidate its leadership in the voluntary carbon market.

The change in name and in the company’s image reflects the consolidation of Sustainable Carbon’s leadership in the voluntary carbon market – the company is the leading project developer in the voluntary market in terms of the number of VCS-validated projects it has on the Markit Environmental Registry. Providing the industry with a fresh, clean and new brand image help Sustainable Carbon’s clients associate “high-quality” to the projects that the company develops.
“Credibility is everything in this industry. Buyers of Sustainable Carbon’s offsets want to know they are acquiring credits of the highest quality and integrity. The way to ensure that is by buying projects which use methodologies that other project developers use as well. As we use the SOCIALCARBON® Standard in all of our projects, the market regularly confused the Social Carbon Company with the SOCIALCARBON® Standard, which was developed by the Ecológica Institute, a Brazilian NGO,” says Brennan Duty, the marketing coordinator at Sustainable Carbon.
The newly-launched site has a wealth of information on climate change, the carbon market, sustainable development and related subjects. “It´s a platform that will easily communicate what we do and who we are to all of our clients, collaborators and stakeholders. The idea is that by effectively communicating what we do in Sustainable Carbon, we will be able to show the viability of the environmental/carbon markets as a cost-effective approach that bring sustainability to the businesses and communities on the front lines of climate change,” says Duty.
There is no change in the company’s focus. “We are just changing the name. Our core competency as a project co-developer of greenhouse gas emission reduction projects will only grow stronger. We are recognized just as much for our projects reducing greenhouse gas emissions as for the extra social, environmental and financial benefits they bring to businesses and communities throughout Brazil and, soon, in other South American countries,” says the CEO of Sustainable Carbon, Stefano Merlin.
Sustainable Carbon’s projects generate Verified Emission Reduction (VER) credits which are sold to businesses, organizations and governments all over the world. The VERs are calculated based on the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), the most trusted and widely-used standard in the voluntary market as it is the only voluntary carbon standard specifically designed to exacting ISO principles. Like the VCS quantifies carbon emissions, the SOCIALCARBON® Standard provides a methodology by which extra social, environmental and financial benefits can be brought to a project and assessed over the lifetime of that project. Having dual-standard verification reduces project risk while promoting comprehensive sustainability.
"We are professionals in developing renewable energy projects that generate co-benefits for local stakeholders. Due to our vast experience both in the field and talking with international clients, we’re well-adept at providing companies with solutions and strategies to mitigate their risk exposure to climate change," explains Duty.
